Today, more and more growers no longer use traditional hid and T5 fluorescent lamps, but install LED lighting. Compared with HID light source, LED emits less heat, which means that the proximity of LED planting lamp and canopy is different from that of traditional planting lamp. It is also important to understand how the best growth distance affects different stages of plant growth.

How to measure the light used for plant growth

PPFD is a measurement of the amount of light (photons) that the sun "pours" over time to plants. PPFD is an important indicator because it can help growers accurately measure the light intensity of photosynthesis at the canopy level. This is also important because lights too close to the canopy can cause burning, fading, growth obstructed or discolored.

Where should the growth lamp be placed?
For seedlings, LED growth lamps should normally be installed between 24-36 inches above the plant canopy, but this depends on the power of the light source (Watts). Place led planting lights at the furthest distance from the seedlings (~ 36 inches) - this keeps the heat and light intensity low and helps prevent the seedlings from drying. Once the root system is established and sprouting, the light can be moved closer (usually within the first 2-3 weeks).
During plant growth, led planting lights should be 12-24 inches from the top of the canopy. At this stage, photosynthesis requires more light, so the light source should be located near the plant.
With the plant entering flowering stage, the demand for strong light is reduced. The top leaf of the canopy shall be 18-24 inches from the light source to produce flowers. It is at this stage that the height of the plant increases and the fruit grows. Depending on the light and the way you want the crop to grow, you don't have to change the height of the light during flowering, especially if you don't want tall plants.
